[ He lightly places a hand over her tail, a little show of gratitude before he drops his hand back to his side.
There's some quiet on his end as he thinks about what she says, weighing her words against what he knows before breaking out into a smile that isn't so heavy. ]

The way I deal with Astarion and Nehan both is I let them get the horrible out of their systems, and then I keep coming back twice as kind. It's worked so far.
